Mascara Review: Maybelline's Lash Sensational

Finding a really good mascara is a struggle; especially when you aren't blessed with naturally lush peepers and have to deal with annoyingly short, stubby lashes that require a mascara boost at all times.

Lately I've become obsessed with finding good quality but affordable mascara formulas 'drugstore mascaras' as US and UK beauty enthusiasts brand them. These are usually mascaras found at stores such as Clicks, Dis-Chem or Pick n' Pay; and even though I love a good luxe brand mascara, sometimes a girl doesn't have the money to blow. But what I always tell people is that there are so many affordable beauty brands in the market right now that are selling some seriously A-grade mascaras yes, ones that are just as good as that R400 mascara you've been eyeing.

One mascara I bought recently was Maybelline's Lash Sensational after two friends recommended it; also its metallic pink packaging is hella cute so I was instantly sold.

THE FORMULA: The consistency of the mascara isn't too runny but it isn't too thick either. I personally feel that it has the perfect consistency for lash coating. Thick formulas often create a lot of clumping, while runny formulas usually leave a complete mess on your eye area which is never ideal. Lash Sensational doesn't do any of this I had two tiny smudges just above my lash line after applying the mascara, which I easily removed off with a dry cotton swab.

DRYING: Another important factor I looked out for was its drying time. What I noticed is that this mascara doesn't immediately dry after each coat you can literally apply four or five coats and you'll still be able to smoothly brush through your lashes, which is really nice. Flaking was never an issue for me when I wore it for the first time, and I kept this mascara on for HOURS.

THE COLOUR AND THE FINISH: In terms of colour, just think of the blackest black mascara tint...that's what Maybelline's Lash Sensational provides. One factor many people often disregard when reviewing mascaras is the finish, i.e. how does the mascara formula look on your lashes once it's dried completely. In the past, I've tested mascaras that left my lashes with a dull and dry-looking black tint to them Lash Sensational doesn't create this at all.

THE BRUSH: I'm obsessed with this brush, and I'll never ever throw it away. Unlike many mascara brushes which have identical bristles going all the way round the tip of the wand, Lash Sensational features a 'lash multiplying brush' consisting of long, widely-spaced bristles on one side and short, tightly-spaced bristles on the other side.

The short bristles make it much easier for you to coat small lash hairs in the inner corners of your eyes as well as reach the roots of your lashes when applying the mascara. The longer bristles on the other hand, help de-clump and spread out your lash hairs as you brush them leaving you with defined and much longer lashes.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Lash Multiplying Mascara is available at Clicks for R144.
